A Message from Ted Paone, Pond Tour Director
Welcome to our backyard paradise. We invite you to enjoy our gardens and ponds on the Austin Pond and Garden Tour 2016 “Ponds and Picnics”. On June 4 & 5, see Austin and the surrounding areas in a different way, visiting the homes of over 25 pond owners who proudly share their glorious ponds, fish, lilies and lotus as well as their beautiful gardens.
What a great way to spend the weekend. Visit the south ponds on Saturday, come back after dinner to view the two spectacular Night Ponds and see the north ponds on Sunday. You can start at any pond and follow the map or go your own way and pick the ponds you want to see.
Pack up a picnic basket, get your wristband and drive through parts of Austin you probably never knew existed to see some amazing DIY and professionally built water features you probably never knew existed. Order your wristbands early and save. Gather a group of friends and save even more. Or volunteer for a four-hour shift, you will be able to tour the ponds for free and get the T-shirt. Click on the picture below to be taken to the Volunteer Form.
In order for it to be a success, the Austin Pond Tour relies on the help of a large number of volunteers. Most of the volunteers work at the different ponds to act as the welcoming committee and to check in the guests as they arrive. Usually the work shift is for 4 hours. It is interesting and rewarding work and you get to meet a lot of very nice people. If it is available, volunteer may choose a pond to work. Maybe with their neighbors or friends.
In return for volunteering, each person gets a Tour Tee Shirt and a free ticket to visit the rest of the ponds on the Tour, good for both days, fitted in around their own shift. If you are interested or know of someone who is, please contact Ted Paone at email@example.com for more details or
Mary Capps who is the Volunteer Organizer this year at firstname.lastname@example.org
Use this link to get to the Volunteers Form. Fill it out and Mary will do her best to accommodate you.

Announcing the 2016 Pond Tour
Tickets are now on sale. Tour Dates June 4 & 5, 2016
The 22nd Austin Pond Society Pond and Garden Tour is already shaping up to be one of the best ever in recent years with 26 ponds registered for the tour split equally between North and South. There is only one repeat pond from last year when it was new and had not grown in. The rest are either completely new to the tour or it has been several years since they were last on the tour. All have something to offer.
The tour is the major fund-raiser for the Austin Pond Society. It funds our charitable giving, this year, the Zilker Garden Conservancy. For the tour to be a success, it takes Ponds, People and Perseverance. This is also our main outreach to the general public, introducing them to the joys of ponds and water gardens and hopefully, bringing them into the society. This is going to be a great tour with lots of help from the board and you, the members.
Tickets for this wonderful event can be purchased online. They come in 3 different categories.
(a) Individual tickets can be purchased for all members from ages 12 and over at a cost of $20 per ticket in advance on the website. If you miss this opportunity, the cost on the tour weekend is $25.00 and tickets can only be purchased at any of the ponds on the tour. They are good for both days, Saturday and Sunday.
(b) A new category for a group purchase whereby any organization or group of people numbering 10 or more, may purchase at the group price of $15.00 per ticket. Children under 12 years cannot be counted as a part of that group but of course are welcome to view the ponds for free.
(c) A single pond ticket can be purchased for any particular pond for $5.00 at that pond. If the purchaser then wishes to upgrade to a full priced ticket to visit other ponds, they may do so at any of the ponds by paying an additional $20.00 in exchange for their single pond ticket.
With the exception of the single pond ticket, all tickets are good for both days of the Tour.
When purchasing online, you pay either with PayPal or for those of you who prefer, with a credit card which uses the PayPal system. You are given the choice of payment after pressing the PayPal button. Be sure to print your receipt (Control P) which you must hand in at the first pond you visit to exchange for wristbands, good for all of the remaining ponds on the Tour. Use the link below to get to the purchasing section.
We are very excited about this Tour and with your help, it will be a resounding success. Hope to see you out and about.

That Durned Heron is Back
Take a look at the video from this morning, April 12 at 8:00 am. What is surprising is that this pond is well over 3 feet deep and the heron looks like it is almost swimming at the start of the video which we all know they can’t do. Probably momentary panic as the pond was a bit deeper than expected.
For some reason, the camera never caught the Heron entering the water. It had to jump straight in as there are no ledges. The only reason I knew it had come this morning is because one of my dogs was sniffing away like crazy around the spot the Heron got out and also because the fish never came up for food. This got me indoors to check the videos. Hopefully, it only caught the one fish.
This particular camera is not the most sensitive one as compared to the other 3. It also had not switched over from night vision to day time hence the strange look of the film.

There is now a list of available books about all aspects of ponds that we carry in our fairly extensive Library. You can check them out at the meeting for free. Our Librarian is Betty Blackson and you can reach her at email@example.com
Leaf Landscape Supply - Click Image for Map
Leaf Landscape Supply has disassembled the fish tanks and equipment to the ponds and has filled them in at their Oak Hill location. This equipment is up for grabs and Jeff told me today that he is looking for any reasonable offers for it. If you are looking to upgrade what you have or are considering building a new pond, it would be well worth the while to take a drive over there. They also have a large number of pond baskets and a few containers. They do plan on carrying pond supplies but are getting out of the ponds and pond plant business.
