This will probably not be easy to accomplish. Eventually, the roots of the plant will find the water, but this may take some time. Depending on the height and amount of water needed, a "wick" would most likely be sizable. Try experimenting with very fibrous rope where the fibers run lengthwise instead of being woven.
We also have planted some plants in the rock wall surrounding our pond. In one area where we have maiden hair fern, we actually pump water to the back side of the rocks to keep the roots moist. In other areas, we hand watered the plants until the roots were long enough.
