I have a shelf of flat rocks on the edge, with liner underneath, that the pot sits on and trickles back in. You could also have it in the water, as long as a good bit of the gravel was above water. The oxygen helps a lot, so a pure under water filter wouldn't be as good.
My pump is only 100 gph for a 300 gallon pond, so you'd probably want to just use the diverter valve on your pump for a fraction of the output. Too much flow will keep washing sediment and good bacteria back into the pond.
The foam filter will help, but it will probably clog. Cleaning it every few days will clear up the excess gunk, but won't allow bacteria to establish.
As for being on the right track, a spring algae bloom is something that experienced ponders see and expect. You can avoid them, but nature will usually catch up soon enough, so go out and enjoy the day.
