Hi Jeanette
Sorry to hear about your unattended pond, but it will definitely get much better. For starters I would look on our advertisers page. Emerald Garden, The Fish Tender, Mermaid Waterscapes and Hill Country Water Gardens all do pond maintenance and can do what you want. The first two are south and other two north, though they probably all go where needed. I sounds like to me it has just sat there and everything went stagnant. You probably have a bunch of crud at the bottom of the pond. You may have a Purifalls type filter which is at the base of the waterfall. The mesh bag is just a 'prefilter' for your pump. It just sounds like everything needs a thorough cleaning and fresh water replace. DON'T GIVE UP. There will likely be a little learning curve but assuming your equipment is functional and adequate once the pond has seasoned, overall maintenace should be a walk in the park compared to what it sounds like your husband has done already. Once it is cleaned up, many people prefer to maintain there own pond, as it is typically relatively little for an approximately 1500 gal pond, but the four companies mentioned (I hope I didn't miss one) also do routine upkeep as well. I will warn you that unless you decide to go with a UV, fighting green water (algae) can be a challenge, especially the first year. Feel free to check back if you need to understand what the pond maintenance people tell you or just to say hi or why. Good Luck!
Bill
