I also remembered something Helge mentioned a while back. During the really hot months sometimes lilies will really shoot up blooms, because it thinks it might be dying and is trying to make sure it makes as many seeds as possible to continue the species. Once the temps begin to fall (like recently) it realizes the end is not near and begins to rest from the hard work of pushing up blooms. This account might endow the plants with a little more mental power than they actually have, but you get the idea:)
