Although I still profess no direct experience with this that makes good sense to me. Perhaps something in the deepest part, tall enough for everyone to fit in but long enough so that they could escape a probing claw into the 'cave'. I also did not mention depth. It may well be that this requires too much change in the pond, but I believe if they cannot stand in the pond they wont get in. One would think they certainly wouldnt be as effective in their search if they are having to swim. Of course this may require to much of a change in your pond. It would change the look but there is also electrified wire. That might be researched. I am sure there must be some way, but I can certainly understand your reluctance. With just a single loss I let my pond really overgrow for much of the summer so the fish would not be visible to the Heron. Finally I decided I must be able to see the fish my benefit and their's, which is when I went to the scarecrow. As I mentioned though I am not absolutely sure that it didn't move on before I 'uncovered' the pond and put in the motion detector. Don't give up!
