I also had a similar experience except I built a sink filter, very similar to Skippy except using rocks, instead of scrubbies. This could be part of his solution. However, there is no filter that will filter out microscopic algae. The skippy is a good mechanical filter and what it did was filter out extra dirt and clumped up dead algae, which is also a nutrient for more algae. I am guessing that 5 months ago was around the time when many people have early spring bloom. The filter may have been installed about the time that the pond was balancing out anyway. I am not saying the filter didn't help, but I am pretty sure it was not the primary reason your algae cleared up. However, by mechanically removing more suspended waste it certainly may have contributed to it clearing and little faster and staying clear.
