To answer question 1 -- I would not leave an above-ground, 30 gallon "pond" outdoors over the winter. Our daily winter temperature swings can be pretty extreme -- 20s or 30s at night; 70s or 80s the next afternoon. Although water temperatures don't change as rapidly as air temperatures, the ceramic pot will definitely exacerbate the water's low and high temperatures.
