The problem is in maintenance. The cheaper bead filters don't include an air blower, so it is much more likely that the beads will slowly become clogged. I've seen beads in these type filters pack together so tightly that they snapped the internal pipe. I can't really recommend any bead filter that doesn't have one.

It is worth it in the long run to get a good bead filter, like an AquaBead, that includes a blower for backwash cycling.
