Some of the signs os sick fish include isolating themselves, don't eat, have their fins clamped against their body, stay near sources of oxygen, rub against things or jump.
Do not feed koi when the water temperature (not air temp) is 55 degrees or less, or when the temp. is predicted to drop significantly. Since your pond is new, feed very sparingly when you do feed, and only enough that all of the food is eaten within 5-6 minutes. Test the water quality for ammonia and nitrite (ideally, both should test at zero, once the filter is on line). If in doubt, do not feed.
