I presume you are trying to find a leak in a rubber liner. If you do not have too many fish, turn off any pumps you may have to ensure that you do not have leaks in a waterfall or external plumbing. If you have a significant fish load, add a good sized air stone (most pet stores carry these, as well as the air pumps) into the water to keep oxygen in the water. If the leak is definitely in your pond liner and you can afford to let the water leak out of the pond for a while, you will find that the water will eventually stabilize at a specific level. If you then follow the waterline (surface of the water) around your pond, you should be able to find the leak. A note of caution: If the leak is low/deep enough, you may end up draining your pond doing this. House your fish and lilies in a temporary pond if the water level drops significantly (kiddie pools filled with water from the pond work relatively well, but make sure no chemicals like sunblock lotion or cleaners are on the pool surface). This having been said, if you have a slow leak, it may take some time to let the water level drop to the point of the leak. The good news is that you will need to drop the water level anyway to repair the leak. From what I have seen, leaks have a tendency to appear behind or underneath larger/heavier rocks as they can grab and tear the liner. hope that helps... good luck and happy ponding.
